The Department of Transportation announced the distribution of the Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program, awarding $570 million to 400 projects in 32 states. All of the projects selected are working to address at-grade crossings, places where roads and railways intersect. This funding will be used to upgrade infrastructure at railroad crossings, separating roads and rails with bridges and tunnels or offering suitable improvements when separation is not feasible.
“Every year, commuters, residents, and first responders lose valuable time waiting at blocked railroad crossings – and worse, those crossings are too often the site of collisions that could be prevented,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “We’re improving rail crossings in communities across the country to save lives, time, and resources for American families.”
